Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is reportedly considering running as a Independent in the 2018 senate race.
Schwarzenegger has been in the news recently, due to his feud with President Trump. Most recently the two got into an argument over the way in which Arnold left Celebrity Apprentice. As he said that he ended up leaving “The Apprentice.” maintaining his claim that he had quit the show, while Trump claimed he had been fired due to poor ratings.
The news of Schwarzenegger’s potential 2018 Senate run, which has since been picked up by a number of outlets, originated with a report in Politico, which cites “several GOP political insiders in California”
Some are saying that this could be the best time for him to run. This is due to the fact that the current governor Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein is 85 years old, and is very unpopular.
“In politics after Donald Trump, nothing is crazy any longer. We’re in the third dimension here,’’ GOP political consultant Luis Alvarado says. “Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually has more political experience than Trump, would certainly seem to fit a mold to what some of the electorate would find attractive.”
Others do say that it would be hard for him to get back into the political ring, especialy consideing the fact that he left his position as governor last time with a near-record low 23 percent approval rating
Schwarzenegger’s reps have neither confirmed nor denied his interest in a Senate run, saying that they’re keeping “all options open.”
“Right now Gov. Schwarzenegger’s focus is on using his platform to bring some sensibility and coherency to Washington by fighting for redistricting reform, like we did in California,’’ Ketchell told POLITICO via email Thursday. “We are keeping all of our options open as far as how we can accomplish that.”
